Its a New Life; Not Just a Cushion!!
Ron Harvey : EASE customer since 2002 Ron Harvey was a competitive rower at MIT and continued to compete after college until a bicycle accident in 2001 injured his spinal cord at location T10. During rehab, despite frequent pressure lifts, he developed three sores while sitting on a gel cushion. He then switched to an air cushion and got treatment from home care nurses and several wound care specialists. Two of the wounds healed, but one of them remained open. He returned to work after the accident, but spent most of his time lying down to keep pressure off of the wound. Eventually he had to take medical leave from his job. Still no treatment was working, so he had flap surgery. Recovery was 10 weeks lying down in bed. |

He used his recovery to research cushions and ultimately decided to get an Alternating Pressure cushion from EASE Seating Systems. Ron was always very diligent about pressure lifts, but that wasn't doing enough for him to prevent sores. He got his cushion and started to increase his time sitting up. He checked carefully every day for signs of soft tissue breakdown. He has not had any pressure related problems in the 4 years since surgery. Occasionally he gets small abrasions due to transfers and minor sores when he gets off his EASE cushion. But those have healed up without restricting normal activities. He's back to working full time, has completed an MBA, started rowing again, and has started hand cycling. Ron is a member of the U.S. National Adaptive Rowing team. In 2006, Ron won a silver medal in the men's arms-only single sculls at the World Championship . Adaptive rowing is done with the arms only, not the legs. |
